Coronavirus Edinburgh: BBQ warning after lockdown rule breaking almost sets beauty spot on fire

A warning has been issued after a disposable BBQ almost set a beauty spot in the Pentland Hills on fire.

With coronavirus lockdown rules yet to ease up, the public has been instructed only to leave home to take exercise locally, shop, get medical supplies and other essential journeys.

But a minority continue to flout lockdown rules. Earlier this week police in East Lothian warned people should not be travelling substantial distances to walk on beaches and other rule breakers have queued too close together at shops.

Now a disposable BBQ left behind at Bonaly Country Park caused a "smouldering fire", which if left, could have caused widespread damage to the beauty spot.

Edinburgh Outdoors, a council funded project, took to Twitter to warn there is currently an "extremely to very high risk" of wildfires in Edinburgh.

They added: "Sadly, a smouldering fire was discovered today caused by a disposable BBQ.

"This had been discarded at the base of a tree in the woods at Bonaly Country Park, Please do not light fires or BBQs in the Pentland Hills during this time."
