Coronavirus Dublin Airport: Garda non-essential travel warning as over 130 sunseekers caught fleeing Ireland

A whopping 132 people have been caught fleeing Ireland for sunnier climes so far this month.

Gardai have urged the public not to engage in non-essential travel after dishing out €500 fines to dozens of sunseekers in the last week.

As well as those heading abroad, officers have found more than 1,300 people more than 5km from home without a reasonable excuse – a breach that earned offenders a €100 fine.

The latest figures come as the Government plots an increase in the overseas travel fine – with the penalty set to be hiked from €500 to €2,000.

Overall, Gardai have now dealt out around 6,500 fines, covering a number of coronavirus breaches.

Fines for non-essential travel over the border with Northern Ireland came into effect this week.

Announcing today's figures, John Twomey, the outgoing deputy commissioner for policing and security, said most people are sticking to the rules, but there are some still willing to put themselves, their families and their colleagues at risk by breaching the guidelines.

"The vast majority of people are doing the right things," he said.

"They are staying home. Making only essential journeys. Limiting their contacts. We know it is hard. We know it has meant huge sacrifices. We thank them for this and ask people to continue to do the right things.

"Unfortunately, there are still people in this society who are prepared to put themselves, their families, their friends and their colleagues at risk of getting COVID-19.

"Everybody in this society has an individual and collective responsibility to play their part in reducing the spread of COVID-19.

"Everybody in this society has an individual and collective responsibility to play their part in saving lives and reducing serious illness. It is long past time for those who are not playing their part to do so."
