Coronavirus: Doctor with sick child pleads to have test so she can return to work

A doctor with a sick child has pleaded to have a test for coronavirus so that she can return to the frontline.

Dr Samantha Batt-Rawden, whose young son as a chronic lung condition, appeared on Good Morning Britain to address the issue of the lack of testing for frontline NHS staff.

She told GMB hosts Ranvir Singh and Adil Ray via video link that, while it was good news that the amount of testing was ramping up, there was no news as to whether frontline staff would be given priority.

She said: "So the government announced yesterday and we were made aware at the Doctors' Association UK that testing was ramping up. This is really good news but we don't know how much, or indeed any of this, is going to be allocated to frontline staff.

"As you quite rightly said, I'm self-isolating for 14 days and obviously I like to be with my little one when he's unwell, but I really want to be on the frontline and I can't do so without a test.

"Another issue raised on the programme today was the issue of schools closing on Friday and the cancellation of GCSE and A-Level exams.

Susanna Reid, who is currently self-isolating in her home in London with her three sons, grilled Education Secretary Gavin Williamson on how students would receive their final grades.

Good Morning Britain has already seen one of its presenters head into isolation (ITV)

Speaking via video link, she said: "It was a massive issue when you said that you were going to cancel A-Levels and GCSEs... for them not to know what that would mean is a bit of a headache.

"She went on to ask whether they would be awarded on predicted grades, mock exams or coursework.

"I have to be completely honest," the MP replied. "Any route that we go down isn't as good as exams."
