Coronavirus: Deliveroo to drop off food on doorstep amid deadly virus outbreak

Deliveroo has launched a 'no contact' service which offers customers the option to ask for their food to be left on the doorstep so they do not come face to face with the delivery rider.

The new feature comes as many Brits have to self-isolate to curb the spread of coronavirus .

They include people who have been in areas with high coronavirus rates, or around those who have been diagnosed.

Previously, anyone ordering a takeaway through Deliveroo would have to answer their door to pick up their food , which would rule out the service for those who are spending periods in isolation to prevent the spread of coronavirus, as they would risk contaminating Deliveroo's rider.

But from Thursday, customers can leave a note on their online order giving riders permission to leave food on the doorstep.

It means customers can wait for the rider to disappear before heading down to their front doorstep to pick up their food. Customers can use the app to track their food and find out when the rider is approaching their home.

Deliveroo is also providing extra packaging and stickers to seal delivery bags.

A Deliveroo spokesperson said: "At Deliveroo we are taking action to keep our customers, riders and restaurants safe. To make our delivery service even safer we are introducing a no-contact, drop-off service."

Deliveroo is available in Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham.
