Coronavirus deaths reach 27 in Ayrshire

A total of 27 people with coronavirus have tragically died in Ayrshire and Arran so far.

The victims' death certificates stated that Covid-19 contributed to or caused their loss of life.

Ayrshire has the fourth highest death rate in Scotland alongside Forth Valley.

It may be even higher as families have a number of days to register the loss of their loved ones.

The data was published by the National Records of Scotland today.

The number of deaths in the area have been revealed for the first time.

The highest number of deaths linked to coronavirus - 122 -  occurred in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Up to April 5, 354 deaths have been registered in Scotland with Covid-19 mentioned in the death certificate.

The first person with the virus died on March 16 in Scotland.

There have been no deaths  in Orkney and Western Isles.

More than 60 per cent of all deaths involving Covid -19 were people aged 75 or over.

There have been a rising number of cases of the virus in care homes in Ayrshire  including at Glenfairn House in Ayr.

Pete Whitehouse, director of statistical services, said: “We are living in unprecedented times and all of these deaths are tragic.
He added: “We have produced these statistics based on deaths involving COVID-19, so this includes any deaths where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate, whether it is the underlying cause of death or a contributory cause and includes registered deaths resulting from suspected or probable COVID-19.”
