Coronavirus deaths in UK rise by 260 in a day to 1,019

The number of people diagnosed with coronavirus in the UK to have died has reached 1,019.

It is an increase of 260 from 759 yesterday.

The news was announced by the UK Government's Department of Health and Social Care.

It is the largest jump in COVID-19 deaths in the UK since the outbreak began.

There are now 17,089 confirmed positive cases of the virus in the country.

120,776 tests have been carried out with 103,687 returning negative.

In Scotland, 40 people diagnosed with the virus have died.

Meanwhile the number of confirmed cases in Scotland has shot up by 186, from 1,059 to 1,245, in 24 hours.

As it stands, there are 376 positive cases in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde region, a rise of 77 from yesterday's total of 299.

Yesterday, Scotland's Chief Medical Officer Dr Catherine Calderwood said the number of people infected with the virus is estimated to be around 65,000.
