The number of novel coronavirus deaths in Japan reached 1,000 on Monday.
The figure includes the deaths of people infected onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was docked in the Port of Yokohama earlier in this year.
The first death in Japan of an infected person had been confirmed on Feb. 13.
Meanwhile in Tokyo on Monday, there were 168 new cases of the novel coronavirus, the 12th day in a row that more than 100 people have been newly infected. On Sunday, 188 people were newly confirmed to have been infected with the novel coronavirus.
The number of cases that have been confirmed in Tokyo is 9,579.
