Coronavirus deaths almost double overnight as hundreds more UK cases confirmed

The number of deaths due to coronavirus has almost doubled as hundreds more cases are confirmed.

Public Health England and the Government's health and social care department says 10 more people have now died, bringing the total to 21.

The latest figures as of 9am on Saturday, March 14 also show there are now 1,140 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus, up from 798 yesterday.

Regional statistics are yet to be published by PHE.

The large spike in cases - the biggest to date - comes as the Government announced it would be banning mass gatherings as early as next week.

So far in Nottingham, The Who and Cirque Du Soleil have both cancelled shows at the Motorpoint Arena and Nottingham Forest has been forced to reschedule some of its nine remaining games.

Passengers travelling from East Midlands Airport have also been affected by Jet2 cancellations due to the worsening picture in Spain.

As of yesterday, there were six cases in the county and five in the city, bringing the total number of cases to 11 in Nottinghamshire.
