Coronavirus death toll rises by another 12 in North East hospitals

There have been a further 12 coronavirus deaths recorded in the North East.

The new figures were released on Monday as the Prime Minister revealed how some lockdown measures can start to be eased in the UK.

The Department of Health said there had been a total of 210 new deaths as of 5pm on Sunday.

Boris Johnson's 60-page "road map" sets out what the Government sees as being possible now and what may be possible in the future.

It includes being able to meet up with one other person outside of your household, provided you maintain social distancing, and being able to play some sports including golf and tennis.

Addressing the new advice which allows more outdoor contact, Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England, said: “There is a little bit of room for manoeuvre, the numbers are going down."

In the North East, the County Durham and Darlington and South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS trusts had the highest new deaths recorded in the last 24 hours at three.

Four trusts in the region had no deaths at all.

Here is the breakdown:

County Durham and Darlington - 3

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear - 0

Gateshead - 2

Northumbria - 2

South Tyneside and Sunderland - 3

Newcastle - 0

North Tees and Hartlepool - 2

South Tees - 0

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys - 0
