Coronavirus: Death toll rises by 938 to 7,097 after deadliest day yet

The UK's coronavirus death toll has risen by almost 1,000 in just 24 hours during the deadliest day yet.

England has recorded the most deaths (6,483), followed by Scotland (366), Wales (245) and Northern Ireland (78), with the combined total now standing at 7,097.

Of the 828 new deaths in England, the youngest victim was just 22, the oldest was 103, and 46 of the patients had no known underlying health conditions.

Bristol now has 234 confirmed cases of coronavirus following 23 more people being infected with the deadly disease in just one day.

South Gloucestershire also witnessed a steep rise with 16 more cases, bringing the district's total to 155.

As of 9am on April 8, North Somerset had 91 cases, up from 82.

The daily figures come after it was confirmed Prime Minster Boris Johnson is improving and has been sitting up in hospital.

While in Bristol, scientists have developed a potential vaccine for COVID-19 and are ready to start testing, with hopes that it could be distributed 'worldwide'.
