Coronavirus death toll in Greater Manchester rises - 37 more lives have been lost

A further 37 coronavirus deaths have been recorded at Greater Manchester hospitals.

Some of those patients passed away in the last 24 hours. Others lost their lives in past days and weeks.

It takes time for deaths to be confirmed via the NHS, with some taking longer to be recorded. Post mortem exam reports have to be processed and tests to be validated.

The latest NHS data shows that a total of 1,245 people have died at Greater Manchester's hospitals having tested positive for COVID-19.

The Manchester Evening News previously reported how the number of coronavirus deaths in Greater Manchester peaked in mid April - eight days after the rest of England.

In the last 24 hours, the biggest increase in recorded deaths was at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, where another dozen fatalities were announced.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust reported a further nine deaths; Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust another seven; and Stockport NHS Foundation Trust a further four.

There were two further deaths reported at both Bolton NHS Foundation Trust and Tameside and Glossop trust.

Another person died of the virus at the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

NHS England is now reporting the number of patient deaths where there has been no COVID-19 positive test result, but where the virus is documented as a 'direct or underlying cause of death'.

This means the data includes suspected and confirmed fatalities.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths at hospitals in England has risen by 546 in the past 24 hours, though the total number of deaths is likely to be much higher.

The change has been introduced for deaths from April 24 onwards.

Deaths 'in the community' - including care homes and people's own homes - are not recorded in these figures and are published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) several days later.

On Tuesday (April 28), the ONS said 3,096 people died in care homes in a week from coronavirus - which is triple the 1,043 coronavirus-related deaths registered at care homes in the previous week in England and Wales.

In total, there were 4,343 deaths in care homes involving COVID-19 reported by care home providers in England to the Care Quality Commission up to April 24, the ONS said.

Data also revealed there were 21,284 deaths involving COVID-19 in England up to April 17 (and which were registered up to April 25) compared with 15,293 deaths in hospitals in England for the same period, reported by NHS England.

The ONS total is 39 per cent higher than the comparable total published daily by NHS England, which had revealed more than 21,000 people have died in hospitals.

On April 28, the total figures for coronavirus deaths at Greater Manchester hospitals stand at:

  • Bolton NHS Foundation Trust - 155

  • Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust - 8

  • Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust - 258

  • Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust - 328

  • Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust - 3

  • Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust - 132

  • Stockport NHS Foundation Trust - 100

  • Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust - 103

  • The Christie NHS Foundation Trust - 6

  • Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust - 152

Some of the larger trusts run several hospitals in Greater Manchester.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust oversees the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Wythenshawe Hospital and Trafford General, while Pennine Acute is in charge of North Manchester General Hospital, Fairfield Hospital, the Royal Oldham Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary.
