Coronavirus death toll continues to rise, latest figures

Another person has died after contracting coronavirus at a Bristol hospital trust.

The University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust, which runs Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital, reported one new death on Wednesday, bringing its total to 143.

While North Bristol NHS Trust - which covers Southmead Hospital - recorded no new deaths on June 17. There have been 118 at the trust.

As for positive Covid-19 tests, Public Health England's figures published at 4.02pm, yesterday, show North Somerset has reported a further three confirmed cases.

This is the first time since Friday (June 12) the district has reported a positive lab result for Covid-19.

There were no new cases in Bristol yesterday, with the city's total still standing at 720.

And both Bath and North Somerset and South Gloucestershire have not seen an increase for a week (June 9), with the number of cases in these areas standing at 237 and 406 respectively.

PHE's figures show there has been 42,153 coronavirus-related deaths across the UK after 184 more were recorded on Wednesday.

There's also been 299,251 confirmed cases of the deadly virus across the UK since the pandemic started.

And it was revealed on Wednesday that the government's track and trace app might not be released until the winter months.

The Health Secretary originally promised the app, still under testing on the Isle of Wight, would be rolled out across the nation in ‘mid-May’.

He told Brits it was their “duty” to download it in large numbers in order to combat the spread of Covid-19.

Now, Health Minister Lord Bethel indicated the delivery of the app had slipped even further.

He told the Science and Technology Committee the pilot of the app on the Isle of Wight had been successful, but also showed that people prefer human contact to a technological one.

Speaking of the app, he said: "We're seeking to get something going for the winter, but it isn't the priority for us at the moment."
