Coronavirus death toll at Wigan hospitals reaches 250

A total of 250 people have now died at hospitals in Wigan after being infected by the coronavirus.

New figures announced show that two more patients died as a result of COVID-19 in the last week, taking the total number of deaths from the disease under Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust to 250.

The data published by NHS England includes deaths where the person had tested positive for the virus or where COVID-19 was mentioned on their death certificate.

But the figures do not include COVID-19 fatalities in the wider community - including care homes. The true death toll is thought to be much higher.

Hundreds more have died at care homes and in their own homes across the region since the outbreak started.

Statistics detailing how many people have died from the virus outside hospital are only released once a week.

The total number of people to die from coronavirus in hospitals across the Greater Manchester region now stands at 2,015 as of Tuesday, June 23, the figures show.

On Tuesday, another 46 deaths were recorded in hospitals around England - including 15 in the North West, the NHS has said.

It brings the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,384.
