Coronavirus death toll almost at 3,000 in UK as biggest rise yet confirmed

The UK's coronavirus death toll has almost reached 3,000 after the biggest rise in a day yet.

A total of 2,921 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Wednesday (April 1), the Department of Health said.

That figure is up by 569, from 2,352 the day before.

It beats the previous record rise of 563, which had only been confirmed yesterday.

The Department of Health also said that, as of 9am on Thursday, a total of 163,194 people have been tested of which 33,718 tested positive.

Public Health England said 10,657 tests were carried out in England on Wednesday and testing capacity for inpatient care in England currently stands at 12,799 tests per day.

It comes after the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Bristol increased by 14 in just 24 hours - the joint biggest daily increase so far.

There were 117 confirmed cases of infected people in our city as of the latest figures, at 9am on April 1.

Cases have also increased in surrounding areas. In South Gloucestershire, there are now 76 positive tests, this is an increase of ten.

While in North Somerset some 42 people have been confirmed, up by two.

It comes after First Bus confirmed on Sunday its Bristol-based driver Martin Egan has died with coronavirus.

Other coronavirus deaths in the area include a 94-year-old man who passed away at Weston General Hospital and retired police officer Nick Matthews who died in Bristol Royal Infirmary on Saturday, March 14.

The 59-year-old, who had underlying health issues, died shortly after returning from a holiday in the Canary Islands.
