Coronavirus data shows worrying rise in COVID-19 infection rates across Bristol

New government data shows a worrying increase in the coronavirus infection rate in all four areas in and around Bristol.

There were 460 positive COVID-19 tests confirmed across the city between September 28 and October 4 as the total number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic grew from 4,468 to 4,928.

All four areas have seen sizeable rises in cases, with Public Health England data showing that the number of cases per 100,000 people in each district has risen significantly from last week.

The biggest rise has been seen in South Gloucestershire, where the infection rate has risen from 363 cases per 100,000 people in the city to 403.4 - equivalent to 127 new cases.

The City of Bristol has also seen a big rise, with the infection rate jumping from 403.3 to 442.4, translating to 198 new infections.

The area with the slowest growth in the infection rate is North Somerset, where the rate grew from 535.7 to 555.2, still equal to 53 new cases.

The latest COVID-19 infection rates in each district in and around Bristol is as follows:

  • North Somerset - 555.2 cases per 100,000 people (up 19.5, equivalent to 53 new cases)
  • City of Bristol - 442.4 (up 39.1, equivalent to 198 new cases)
  • South Gloucestershire - 403.4 (up 40.4, equivalent to 127 new cases)
  • Bath and North East Somerset - 329.1 (up 38.3, equivalent to 82 new cases)

The figures were released after it was revealed that 102 positive tests were confirmed across Bristol in the last 24 hours.

The total number of people to have tested positive for the virus in each area in and around the city since the beginning of the pandemic, as of 9am yesterday (Monday, October 5) is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 2,050
  • North Somerset - 1,194
  • South Gloucestershire - 1,150
  • Bath and North East Somerset - 636
