Coronavirus: Cristiano Ronaldo to finance 35 intensive care beds in relief effort

Cristiano Ronaldo and super-agent Jorge Mendes will finance three new intensive care wards featuring 35 fully-equipped beds in the continuing relief effort against the coronavirus pandemic in their native Portugal.

The duo had already put their hands in their pockets to supply 200,000 gowns and three ventilators for the Sao Jao medical facility in Porto.

And they have now gone a step further by funding intensive care wings at the North Lisbon University Hospital Centre (CHULN) and Porto's Santo Antonio hospital.

CHULN told ESPN: "Businessman Jorge Mendes and Cristiano Ronaldo will donate two intensive care wings for the CHULN; each wing will be totally equipped and will have the capacity for 10 beds.

"The units will be equipped with the charitable contribution of Mendes and Ronaldo. This equipment includes beds, ventilators, heart monitors, pumps and infusion syringes, essential equipment in the care of critically ill patients with COVID-19.

"These units, called UCI Jorge Mendes and UCI Cristiano Ronaldo, after the COVID-19 [pandemic is over] will be converted and will remain as a reinforcement of intensive care medicine, which had 31 beds before the new coronavirus pandemic, increasing its capacity to 51 beds."

As of Tuesday, there have been 23 confirmed deaths in Portugal due to coronavirus and more than 2,000 confirmed cases.

A state of emergency was declared in the country last week.

Ronaldo is back in Madeira after his mother Dolores suffered a stroke, from which she has now recovered.

He has been self-isolating after Juventus teammates Daniele Rugani, Blaise Matuidi and Paulo Dybala tested positive for coronavirus.
