Coronavirus: Couple donate wedding food to NHS after being forced to cancel ceremony

A couple whose wedding celebrations were cancelled due to the coronavirus have donated the food they had ordered to NHS workers.

As a result of Fiona and Adam Gordon’s donation, more than 400 hospital staff in Hull were fed over the weekend.

After the pair were told their wedding could not take place on Saturday, they were asked by the catering company if they wanted to donate the food.

Tony Norris, who runs the catering company Galloping Gourmet, enrolled veterans’ charity Hull4Heroes to help serve the food.

The charity wanted to thank NHS staff for their hard work and offered to foot the bill for the meal, leaving Mr and Mrs Gordon with credit to put towards a wedding party at a later date.

The pair chose to go ahead with their wedding, with two witnesses rather than the 120 guests they had planned for.

Referring to all the food that had already been prepared, Ms Gordon said: "That would have been a lot to go to waste.

"The reaction we have had for doing this is absolutely amazing, but of course the real heroes here are the charity workers,” she added.

Paul Matson, the founder of Hull4Heroes, said he and his team felt "choked up” while they were serving food to staff at the Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital.

He said: "Everyone was delighted, even the head of the hospital came out and thanked us, so we made everyone happy and that's exactly what we wanted to do."
