Coronavirus could see Rangers away match against Leverkusen played behind closed doors

The second leg of Rangers' Europa League tie against Bayer Leverkusen could be played behind closed doors.

Leverkusen is in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, which has the highest number of Coronavirus cases in Germany.

By Monday afternoon, the area had more than 500 of Germany's 1,151 infections.

On Sunday, Germany's Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn tweeted: "After many discussions with those responsible, I emphatically encourage the cancellation of events with more than 1,000 participants until further notice."

That message places a question mark over Bayer Leverkusen v Rangers, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday March 19.

Armin Laschet, Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia, is quoted by the BBC as saying: "I will let the clubs decide if they want to play without spectators or if they prefer to not play at all."

Steven Gerrard's side welcome Leverkusen to Ibrox in the first leg this Thursday.

Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara, meanwhile, says Thursday's match is an opportunity to prove the doubters wrong, saying: "It is a huge week for the club but it is one we are all looking forward to.

"Now we want to deliver good performances. Some people write us off in Europe and they don't expect us to get results so hopefully we can prove them wrong."
