Coronavirus: Cops patrol busy High Street as dozens stroll through town despite lockdown

Frustrated cops on bikes patrol Paisley’s High Street as dozens of selfish shoppers stroll through town during a nationwide lockdown.

This was the scene at noon on Friday, with Buddies stopping to chat and browse through the shops that remain open for “essential” supplies.

However, Paisley cops have vowed to clamp down on those who continue to flout the rules, with eight fines already dished out across the area.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, from Paisley’s community policing team, urged people to heed government advice and stay home.

She said: “I would like to reiterate the government‘s guidance in relation to social isolation and remind local residents to stay at home, unless it is absolutely necessary to go out.

“The vast majority of people are listening and complying with the guidelines.

“However, local officers still continue to see a substantial footfall within Paisley town centre.

“If members of the public do need to leave home, can I please remind them to stay a safe distance from others?

“We continue to see members of the public, often those from the most vulnerable groups, engaged in close contact conversations with others while out shopping.

“It is imperative that we pull together as a community and do everything we can to combat this virus.

“I fully understand that this is a difficult time for everyone, but, if we all abide by the government’s advice, then we may be able to significantly reduce cases and minimise the timescales placed on physical isolation.”

Police Scotland has handed out 146 fines to people not complying with the measures. Eight have been given in the Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Division to date.
