Coronavirus: Confused EastEnders fans fuming after discovering soap's replacement

Confused EastEnders fans were left fuming tonight after making a devastating discovery.

Avid viewers tuned in to BBC One at 7.30pm to watch the next installment from Albert Square after Tuesday's dramatic cliffhanger.

However, they got a nasty surprise when they realised an episode of Garden Rescue was airing instead.

Production has shut down on the BBC soap amid the COVID-19 outbreak with bosses deciding to cut down on the amount of episodes they show per week.

This means that EastEnders has been cancelled on Thursdays and Fridays for the foreseeable future - but many viewers missed the memo.

EastEnders viewers took to Twitter after discovering that the soap was not airing tonight.

"Wait so they didn’t even give us no warm in... jus took off eastenders like boom!!!! I don’t wanna be seeing garden rescue..," said one viewer.

Another added: "JWhen you go to put @bbceastenders on and realise it was cancelled because of blooming #coronavirus, this disease need some to shift pronto it’s even messing with my TV time!"

"I’m absolutely gutted but the safety & well being of the cast & crew is more important than anything xx," argued a third.

EastEnders viewers have come up with a way of getting their Albert Square fix despite no new episodes being made.

Many have suggested that the BBC shows airs classic episodes from Walford in the meantime to keep fans entertained.

This would also act as a refresher and give younger fans of the BBC soap a chance to watch some belting episodes for the first time.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer said: "Can you launch ‘Classic Episodes’ in the absence of new episodes? Replace Tuesday & Friday episodes with iconic episodes to keep us all going??"

"Please show iconic eps on thursdays and fridays! people will go mad if we keep hearing about that virus 24/7," added another.

A third said: "For the days Eastenders is off on Thursday and Friday can you put some classic Eastenders episodes on!"

With immediate effect, episodes will now air on Mondays and Tuesdays only, reducing the weekly amount by half.

A spokesperson said: "In light of the spread of Covid-19, after much consideration, it has been decided that filming on EastEnders will be postponed until further notice. The decision was made after the latest government update.

"We will continue to follow the latest news and advice from the World Health Organisation and Public Health England.

"We have also taken the decision to reduce the amount of episodes we broadcast each week to two, so that we can ensure the audience can continue to enjoy EastEnders in their homes for as long as possible."
