Three employees at Musashino Central Hospital in the Tokyo city of Koganei have tested positive for the new coronavirus, it has been learned.
About 20 patients who were in contact with them also complained of fevers and other symptoms, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
The case could become the first cluster infection to be confirmed in Tokyo after the government lifted the state of emergency on Monday. The metropolitan government asked the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry's cluster-infection task force to conduct an investigation.
According to the metropolitan government, one of the employees was found to be infected with the virus on May 21, and two others later tested positive. Currently, PCR tests are being conducted on about 20 patients to check for infections.
