Coronavirus claims three more lives in Dumfries and Galloway in past week

A further three people in Dumfries and Galloway have died as a result of the coronavirus in the past week.

The latest figures from National Records of Scotland reveal the pandemic has now claimed 69 lives in the region.

The data is compiled based on the number of cases where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

Using that method, there were 278 coronavirus-related deaths across the country between November 9 and 15, 71 more than the previous week.

The NRS figures also show there have been 5,135 coronavirus deaths in Scotland since the start of the pandemic.

The figures used for First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s daily briefing are based on the number of people to have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.

As of yesterday, there had been 3,323 deaths by that measure.

Ms Sturgeon announced yesterday that a number of local authorities would enter level four of the Scottish Government’s tiered restriction system on Friday.

It means pubs, restaurants and non-essential shops must close, with the rules remaining in force for three weeks.

Dumfries and Galloway will remain at level two.
