Coronavirus claims further two lives in Dumfries and Galloway

Two people in Dumfries and Galloway have lost their lives as a result of the coronavirus in the past week.

Figures from National Records of Scotland show the pandemic has now claimed 66 in the region.

The figure is based on the number of cases where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

By that measure, there were 206 coronavirus-related deaths in Scotland between November 2 and 8, including those in Dumfries and Galloway.

NRS data shows there have been 4,856 such deaths in Scotland since the pandemic began.

The total is different from that announced during First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's daily briefing as that figure is based on the number of people to have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus.

As of yesterday, there had been 3,079 deaths by that measure.

Ms Nicola Sturgeon announced yesterday that the region would remain at level two of the Scottish Government's tiered restriction system.

She hoped all level two council areas could move to level one soon, although did say the increasing number of cases in Dumfries and Galloway was causing concern.
