Coronavirus claims Euro 2020 as Scotland face wait to compete for place in continental elite

Euro 2020 has been cancelled as UEFA join leagues across Europe in cancelling their tournament due to the burgeoning COVID-19 crisis.

The tournament will now be pushed back a year until 2021 in a move that could provide some wiggle room for the Premiership to finish the season.

The event that will see games played in 12 cities across 12 countries was always in danger from the moment the situation worsened with the idea of thousands of fans migrating across the continent clearly unfeasable.

Scotland's place in the prestigious tournament is still up in the air with a play-off against Israel likely cancelled for the time being.

If the Scots get through the Hampden test they will face either Serbia or Norway in a tough, one-off away tie.

And it's the Norwegian football association who have confirmed the news.

They tweeted: "UEFA has decided that the European Championship is postponed to 2021. It will be played from 11 June to 11 July next year.

"More information coming."

It remains to be seen what will happen with those play-offs but it's likely that they will be postponed until early next year.

Euro 2020 was due to get under way in Rome on June 12 this summer but the Italian FA were among those calling for it to be postponed.
