Children to get £15 a week voucher to replace school meals during coronavirus lockdown

Parents of children who get free school meals will be issued with vouchers to cover the cost of feeding their little ones while they are at home.

The vouchers will be worth £15 a week - working out at £3 a weekday - which is slightly more than schools are paid for meals per child.

However, the new measures won't be coming into force until April, according to Schools Week.

The vouchers should work at all major supermarkets and look set to be provided by a third party the Government has hired, head teachers have been told.

It's not clear whether they will work over the holiday period yet.

There are 1.3million children in the UK receiving free school meals at the moment.

Pupils in reception, year 1 and year 2 at Government-funded schools get them automatically, while children who have parents in receipt of certain benefits, such as Universal Credit or working tax credit, also qualify.

Details of the scheme have not been made official yet, but the Government has promised families won't be left worse off thanks to the closure of the nation's schools on Friday.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said: "No child who would ordinarily receive a free school meal should go without this while their school is closed or while they are having to self-isolate at home.

"By giving headteachers flexibility on how they can get meals or shop vouchers to these children, they can make the most appropriate decisions for families in their communities, and provide immediate reassurance that this important support will continue."

Children and Families Minister Vicky Ford added: "We are working urgently to set up a national voucher scheme for pupils entitled to free school meals who are staying at home to protect our NHS and save lives.

"This is a major undertaking and I thank schools for the work they are doing to help support families while it is being set up.

"We have already said we will reimburse schools for any additional costs incurred.”
