Coronavirus cases stop falling in a third of Liverpool areas

Nine of Liverpool’s 30 wards have stopped recording falls in coronavirus levels, according to the latest data.

Liverpool Council’s daily coronavirus update from Wednesday shows that just shy of a third of the city’s wards have seen cases stay the same or rise in recent days.

There have been growing concerns about a potential plateau in case levels in our region, with infection rates still very high.

The council’s daily report shows that the seven-day average case rate rose in six wards in the week up to February 7 and plateaued in another three.

The six areas recording rises were Belle Vale, Clubmoor, Cressington, Old Swan, Princes Park and Warbreck.

Childwall, Mossley Hill and Norris Green saw their cases level out.

When should lockdown end?

Warbreck continued to record the city’s highest case rate as of yesterday, with 468 cases per 100,000 people.

The city as a whole is still recording a decrease in its weekly average - but recent days have shown that slowing significantly and Liverpool’s case rate remains at 267.6 cases per 100,000 people, well above the England average.

Public health officials in the city were warning earlier this week that a halting of the fall in infection level s would have serious consequences for the health service and the city’s ability to exit lockdown.

Tweeting on Monday, director of public health Matt Ashton said: "The number of Covid19 cases locally are falling, but remain high, and rate of decrease is slowing. Essential we all #StayAtHome wherever possible, #GetTested when we have #Covid19 symptoms, and at all other times strictly follow #HandsFaceSpace."
