Coronavirus cases soar in Scotland as 2,524 cases reported in one week

Coronavirus cases this past week have skyrocketed, with 2,524 cases reported across Scotland since last Monday (21st September), data shows.

In the past week, four people have reportedly died from the virus.

Cases in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde region have risen by 1,166, with the total sitting at 8,661.

As of yesterday, new figures released by the Scottish Government suggested the spread of the virus has slowed slightly in the past 24 hours, with the rate of new positive tests falling to 9.1% of all those screened, compared to 11.5% reported on Saturday.

Again, the highest increase was in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board area, where a further 172 cases were reported, exactly 50% of the increase for the rest of the country.

Many of the cases have been attributed to outbreaks in University Halls of residence.

Last night, students were told they can return home from university accommodation on a long-term basis, as long as they follow rules on self-isolating.

Updated guidance from the Scottish Government sets out what those who are studying higher education can do if they wish to change household.

Students have been asked to follow self-isolating rules and not use public transport if they decide to permanently return to another home, while still saying it is an "offence" to undertake short stays without a "reasonable" excuse.
