Coronavirus cases soar across Bristol region by more than 200 in one day

More than 200 coronavirus cases have been confirmed across the Bristol region over the past 24 hours.

According to the latest Government data, 207 positive lab tests were returned today (October 19) in Bristol and its neighbouring areas.

The figures were announced as Wales' First Minister revealed he planned to roll out a short circuit-breaker lockdown, as Boris Johnson faced mounting calls to impose a similar shutdown in England.

Bristol reported a further 133 cases today, bringing our total to 3,585.

While South Gloucestershire saw a rise of 29, its total is now 1,638.

Bath and North East Somerset recorded a jump of 27, the total there is 1,056.

And North Somerset recorded 18, its total is 1,439.

UK-wide, 18,804 new cases were reported, bringing the nation's total to 741,212.

While 80 further Covid-related deaths were recorded. This brings the national total to 43,726.

University cases

More than 900 students at the University of Bristol have now tested positive for coronavirus, according to the latest figures.

The outbreak among the university's community was first confirmed on October 7 and there are now two student accommodation buildings in the city in lockdown due to the virus spreading there.
