Coronavirus cases rising sharply in one area near Bristol

The spread of confirmed coronavirus cases has slowed in Bristol and most surrounding areas – but North Somerset's figure has been rising sharply.

Public Health England's update from today (May 22) shows the figure for Bristol grew by just one, to 692, in the previous 24 hours.

The number of South Gloucestershire cases stayed at 399, while Bath and North East Somerset's figure remained at 230.

But North Somerset saw a rise of 14, following an increase of 13 the previous day and five the day before that.

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in North Somerset now stands at 392.

The coronavirus death toll at Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) stayed at 108 and Southmead Hospital's remained at 111.

The BRI has seen an increase of 17 deaths since May 11 – during which time only three new deaths have been confirmed at Southmead.

Both University Hospitals Bristol NHS trust, which runs the BRI, and the North Bristol trust, which runs Southmead, declined to comment when asked by Bristol Live about the recent disparity in deaths at the hospitals.

A further 351 Covid-19 deaths were announced today in the UK, taking the total to 36,393.
