Coronavirus cases rise in Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland but fall elsewhere in North East

Coronavirus cases have increased in Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland as the infection rate drops elsewhere in the North East.

There have been fewer cases recorded in Newcastle and County Durham in the most recent figures, following a surge in cases when students arrived in the university cities.

The data was revealed on Tuesday as deaths around the UK soared by 367 - the highest daily jump in five months and more than double the death rate two weeks ago.

The increase is the biggest jump in deaths since May 24, when 379 were announced.

Recorded death figures tend to rise on Tuesdays as a result of a 'weekend lag' which means official figures take longer than the usual 24 hours to be processed.

Some 22,885 people have also tested positive for the disease in the past 24 hours.

In the seven North East local authority areas, Gateshead currently has the highest rate of infection, with an extra 245 recorded cases compared to the week before.

Infection rates have fallen in Newcastle and County Durham, and are now below 300 cases per 100,000 people.

However, North Tyneside cases have gone up, with more than 100 extra positive tests in the last week, and although Northumberland has the lowest infection rate in the North East, it has also increased slightly.

The whole of the North East remains in Tier 2 restrictions, which mean that households cannot mix indoors in order to prevent the further spread of the virus.

The infection rate figures, for the seven days up to October 23, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (October 24-27) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on October 27 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to October 23; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to October 23; rate of new cases in the seven days to October 16; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to October 16.

Gateshead 356.8 (721), 235.6 (476)

Sunderland 326.2 (906), 330.9 (919)

Newcastle upon Tyne 299.8 (908), 336.8 (1020)

County Durham 293.3 (1555), 348.4 (1847)

North Tyneside 270.3 (562), 203.5 (423)

South Tyneside 235.1 (355), 239.1 (361)

Northumberland 174.9 (564), 167.5 (540)
