Coronavirus cases rise in Bristol - with more than 80 confirmed in a week

A further five people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in Bristol over the past 24 hours.

According to the latest government figures (Wednesday, September 16) our city has had 1,661 cases since the start of the pandemic.

And in the past seven days, 85 people have been diagnosed with the virus in Bristol.

In South Gloucestershire, nine more cases were confirmed today and so the district now has 913.

North Somerset has 1,039 active cases, following a rise of four.

And Bath and North East Somerset recorded a further case, the total there is 460.

UK-wide, there's been a further 3,991 lab-confirmed cases of Covid-19. That brings the nation's overall total to 378,219.

Covid deaths

Neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded a new death over the past 24 hours, where deaths remain at 271.

Southmead Hospital reported a coronavirus-related death on Tuesday, August 25, which was the first in the city for two months.

Nationally, 20 more coronavirus-related deaths were recorded today, bringing the UK's total to 41,684.

Local lockdown

An town just over the border in Wales, around an hour from Bristol, has become the latest place confirmed for a lockdown.

Restrictions will be introduced in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) in South Wales from 6pm on Thursday, September 17.

The Welsh Government has announced the move following an increase of cases.

This represents the second area in Wales to be put under such restrictions - after the move was made in Caerphilly last week.

People will not be able to enter or leave the area without a reasonable excuse, such as travel for work or education.
