Coronavirus cases rise in Bristol again

Another three cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Bristol.

NHS England's latest figures show the city's cases have reached 1,289 today (July 10).

It comes after an increase of four the previous day.

South Gloucestershire's cases remain at 743, North Somerset's at 909, and Bath and North East Somerset's at 336.

It has been more than two weeks since a patient died at either Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) or Southmead Hospital.

But the R rate in the South West may have risen above one.

R – the measure of how many new people are infected by each coronavirus case – has reached 0.7 to 1.1 in the region, according to Government figures released today.

If the R number is above one, it means an outbreak can grow exponentially.

Last week's Government figures estimated R in the South West to be between 0.7 and one.

Across England, the figure is now at 0.8 to one, following a rise across the South.

It comes after the night-time economy was allowed to reopen last weekend.

But the estimated growth rate - a figure which reflects how quickly the number of infections is changing day by day - in the South West has dropped.

Last week it was between minus seven per cent and plus two per cent - it is now between minus six per cent and plus one per cent.

The last death confirmed in the Bristol region was on June 26, at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) trust, which runs the BRI and Weston General Hospital.

North Bristol Trust, which runs Southmead Hospital, has recorded 119 patient deaths since the start of the pandemic, the most recent of which was on June 22.

UHBW has reported 151 deaths.
