The health secretary said hospital cases were doubling every eight days amid an alarming surge in infections. The government considered country-wide restrictions on movement “the last line of defence”, he said.

After a little more than a week back in the classroom, scores of pupils and staff are now self isolating following a turbulent start to the term.

Families struggling to access Covid-19 tests has also added to the number of kids unable to attend classrooms.

At least 10 schools in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire have had children test positive for coronavirus since term started - with more reporting "suspected" cases.
