Coronavirus cases have risen by more than 19,500 in the UK.

The Government reported a further 19,790 lab-confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the UK on Sunday.

This brings the total number of infections since the pandemic began in the UK to 873,800.

A further 151 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19. The total death toll in the UK now stands at 44,896.

It comes as officials on the Government’s Covid-19 taskforce are understood to be examining the case for reducing the current fortnight period of isolation to between 10 days and a week.

It could also apply to travellers returning from foreign countries with high coronavirus rates.

Meanwhile one further death from coronavirus was recorded in Scotland in the past 24 hours, as the number of cases in hospital hit more than 1,000.

Scottish Government data shows the number of confirmed cases in hospital at 1,016, a number more than double that of two weeks ago.

On October 11, 449 cases were confirmed in Scotland’s hospitals and the number of people being cared for has grown rapidly from just 45 on September 11.

The number of confirmed cases in the general population also grew by 1,303 to 56,752.

A total of 2,700 people have now died after testing positive for Covid-19 in Scotland.
