Coronavirus cases rise again in Bristol as major treatment breakthrough is announced

More coronavirus cases have been recorded across Bristol and surrounding areas over the past 24 hours, latest figures show.

In Bristol, seven more people have been diagnosed with the virus, taking the city's toll to 1,511 - 326 people per 100,000 populaton.

The were also increases in surrounding areas.

In North Somerset two more cases were recorded, taking the total up to 954, and in South Gloucestershire there was one more infection, with there now being 842 cases.

Also, in Bath and North East Somerset there was one more case, with the total there now being 414.

UK-wide there were 1,508 new cases confirmed today.

Covid deaths

Neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded a new death over the last 24 hours.

Southmead Hospital reported a coronavirus-related death on Tuesday August 25, which was the first in the city for two months.

Nationally, ten further deaths were recorded today, bringing the UK's total to 41,504.

Treatment breakthrough

A team of researchers from Bristol have made a breakthrough in the fight against the disease, as reported today.

University of Bristol -based team has led a study by an international team of scientists.

They have found giving patients who are critically ill with Covid-19 one of three corticosteroids reduced the risk of death by as much as 20 per cent.

The research by the Bristol-based National Institute for Health Research could increase the chances of people seriously ill with coronavirus of surviving it.
