Coronavirus cases in UK soar by 36,804 in 24 hours as deaths rise to 691

The number of positive coronavirus cases recorded in the UK in the last 24 hours has risen by 36,804, the government said on Tuesday.

It's one of the highest daily numbers of positive cases ever recorded during the pandemic.

The UK government said a further 691 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, bringing the UK total to 68,307.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 84,000 deaths involving coronavirus in the UK.

It said that, as of 9am on Tuesday, there had been a further 36,804 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 2,110,314.

Overall, the numbers of positive cases have increased by 61.2 per cent in seven days (up 84,323 on the previous week to 222,199).

The coronavirus rate per 100,000 population now stands at 302 across the UK.

A new Tier 4 system has been introduced in the South East and London to try and reduce the number of cases after a new variant of the virus was discovered, which is more transmissible.
