Coronavirus cases in UK go past 100,000 mark with more than 13,000 patients dead

The UK now has more than 100,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus - but the true total is believed to be much higher due to a lack of testing.

The Department of Health said that, as of 9am on Thursday, 327,608 people have been tested of which 103,093 tested positive.

Overall, 417,649 tests have concluded, with 18,665 tests carried out on Wednesday, excluding data from Northern Ireland.

The UK joins the US, Spain, Italy, France and Germany as being one of only six countries worldwide to register 100,000 cases. China, where the disease originated, has recorded only 82,000, although that figure has been disputed.

A total of 13,729 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Wednesday, the Department of Health said, up by 861 from 12,868 the day before.

Hundreds or even thousands more are thought to have died in care homes, private homes and hospices.

There are signs that the UK is reaching the peak and the curve is flattening, according to Government advisers, who say they will have a better grasp of the trend within the next 10 days.

The four UK nations reported their coronavirus totals individually on Thursday before the Department of Health gave its official toll and before the Government is expected to announce that the lockdown will be extended for three more weeks.

Based on each country's latest totals, 13,828 patients have now died in hospitals in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Department of Health's death toll of 13,729 is lower because new deaths have been reported by Scotland and Northern Ireland since its 5pm cut-off for reporting fatalities.

NHS England said the number of deaths in hospitals in England had increased by 740 to 12,396 on Thursday.

Of the 740 new deaths announced:

- 151 occurred on April 15

- 314 occurred on April 14

- 122 occurred on April 13

The figures also show 143 of the deaths took place between April 1 and April 12, and the remaining 10 deaths occurred in March, with the earliest new death taking place on March 9.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths announced so far by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust has passed 500.

As of 5pm on April 15, the trust had announced 505 deaths, according to figures from NHS England.

This is the highest number for any trust in England.

Two other trusts have announced between 300 and 400 deaths - London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (350) and the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (348).

A further six trusts have announced between 200 and 300 deaths.

NHS England releases updated figures each day showing the dates of every coronavirus-related death in hospitals in England, often including previously uncounted deaths that took place several days or even weeks ago.

This is because of the time it takes for deaths to be confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19, for post-mortem examinations to be processed, and for data from the tests to be validated.

The figures published today by NHS England show that April 8 currently has the highest total for the most hospital deaths occurring on a single day - 782 - although this could change in future updates.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Scotland's death toll had increased by 80 to 779.

The First Minister said 7,102 people have now tested positive for the virus north of the border, up by 354 from 6,748 the day before.

There are 196 people in intensive care with coronavirus or coronavirus symptoms as of Wednesday night, one more than the previous day, she added.

There are 1,799 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, up 51 from Wednesday's figure of 1,748.

The First Minister said that the lockdown measures were working, which could be seen in the relatively stagnant numbers of Covid-19 patients in hospital and in intensive care.

However, the First Minister warned people not to become complacent.

She warned: "We are by no means through this yet."

She announced that an exit strategy on the lockdown would be developed over the next week before it is shared with the public.

Wales' death toll increased by 32 to 495.

Public Health Wales said there were 284 new confirmed cases, bringing the total to 6,401.

A further 18 people in Northern Ireland have died with coronavirus in the past day, according to Thursday's daily bulletin from the Public Health Agency.

This brings the total number of confirmed deaths in the region to 158. There have been 2,201 confirmed cases.

The Government was expected to announce later Thursday that the lockdown would be extended for three more weeks.

Earlier, Health Secretary Matt Hancock stressed the number of deaths is still "far too high" for any exit strategy to be set out.

He warned it will take time for life to return to normal.
