Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike said there were 463 cases of novel coronavirus infections confirmed in Tokyo on Friday.
It was the first time the one-day total in the capital reached 400. The figure was also a record high for the second consecutive day, following Thursday's 367 cases.
Virus cases in Tokyo have been rapidly increasing since July, during which 29 of the days saw more than 100 infections. Seventeen days in July saw more than 200 cases.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, more than 6,400 cases were confirmed in July, accounting for about half the cumulative number of infections, which is so far around 12,600.
The metropolitan government on Thursday asked restaurants that serve alcohol and karaoke spots in Tokyo to cut back their business hours to 10 p.m. from Aug. 3 through Aug. 31.
It also urged Tokyo residents to refrain from dining together and visiting downtown areas during evening hours.
