Coronavirus cases in the North East increase as UK death toll reaches 422

The number of coronavirus cases in the North East has risen with 49 people now suffering from the disease in Newcastle.

The city has seen an increase of seven within the last 24 hours and has had the most positive tests in the region.

Both North Tyneside and Sunderland have seen their confirmed cases rise to 20, while County Durham now has 18.

There have now been 165 positive tests recorded in North East local authority areas and 542 in total in the North East and Yorkshire NHS Region.

The Department of Health confirmed on Tuesday that the total number of deaths in the UK had risen to 422, an increase of 87 since Monday.

Positive cases in the country stand at 8,077.

In the latest government update on the Covid-19 response, Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced that a new hospital would be created at the ExCel in London and that 250,000 volunteers would be recruited to aid NHS and other key workers.

It came a day after Boris Johnson ordered the public to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.

Mr Hancock said: "The more we follow the rules, the sooner we will stop the spread. And so everybody has a responsibility to follow those rules."
