Coronavirus cases in Scotland rise to 85 as government confirm number of patients with deadly disease

85 patients have now been diagnosed with Coronavirus in Scotland - after 25 new cases were confirmed today.

The Scottish Government revealed the new cases this afternoon, just hours after the Scottish FA cancelled all domestic professional and grassroots football until further notice.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also revealed yesterday gatherings of over 500 were to be banned from Monday.

The First Minister announced the action in Scotland to protect the resilience of the emergency services until the impact of the virus has lessened substantially.

A total of 3,314 tests have been concluded in Scotland with 3,229 negative.

The infected patients are from the following NHS health boards;

Ayrshire and Arran - 4

Borders - 3

Fife - 4

Forth Valley - 6

Grampian - 11

Greater Glasgow and Clyde - 21

Lanarkshire - 7

Lothian - 20

Shetland - 6

Tayside - 3

Speaking at a press conference following an emergency Cobra meeting yesterday, The First Minister said: “Event organisers should take action now to help our emergency services deal with the scale of the challenge we face with coronavirus.

“Our frontline services are doing a fantastic job but they are already under pressure, which will increase as the number of cases in Scotland rises.

“The emergency services are well prepared to deal with this outbreak but mass gatherings, such as large football and rugby matches as well as concerts, can have a significant impact on emergency service resources.

“Removing unnecessary burdens on our frontline workers is the right thing to do so they can prioritise their response to where it is needed most.”
