Coronavirus cases in Scotland rise by 18 as number of people who have tested positive reaches 171

171 patients have now been diagnosed with Coronavirus in Scotland - after 18 new cases were confirmed today.

The Scottish Government revealed the cases this afternoon.

From today gatherings of more than 500 people are to be banned to prevent a spread of the virus.

A total of 4,895 tests have been concluded in Scotland with 4,724 negative.

There have been positive tests in all health boards across Scotland.

The first patient has died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus.

Catherine Calderwood, Scotland's chief medical officer, confirmed on Friday it was an older person who passed away.

Chief  Medical Officer  Catherine Calderwood said: "I am saddened to report that a patient in Scotland who tested positive for Coronavirus has died in hospital.

"I offer my deepest sympathy to their friends and family at this difficult time.

"The patient, who was being treated by  Lothian Health Board  was an older person who had underlying health conditions.

"No further information will be available to protect patient confidentiality."

The first person to be diagnosed with Covid-19 in Scotland was from Tayside on March 1.
