Coronavirus cases in schools top 100 for the first time in weeks

More than 100 coronavirus cases have been reported in schools across Wales in the last week as infections rise in the community driven by the more transmissable Delta variant.

It is the first time since March that more than 100 cases have been reported by schools and generally they had been falling.

Hundreds of pupils have been told to self isolate as a result.

Latest data from Public Health Wales shows there were 105 coronavirus cases reported in schools in the six days to June 16 compared to 66 the previous week and 33 the week before that,

Of the 105 cases to June 16 a total 56 were in secondary schools, 40 in primaries and nine in “other” which includes independent schools and pupil referral units. There has been a surge of cases in schools in north Wales linked to gatherings.

The last time cases topped 100 in schools in Wales was in the six days to March 11 when 120 cases were reported.

Despite the overall rise three of Wales’ 22 local education authorities reported no Covid cases in their schools in the six days to June 16 - Blaenau Gwent, Ceredigion and Powys. A number of other council areas have reported a fall in schools cases.

Conwy reported the most schools cases with 21, followed by 15 in Denbighshire and 13 in Flintshire.

Cardiff reported 11 cases in its schools while Swansea and the Vale of Glamorgan recorded five each.

Total: 13 compared to 11 the previous week

Since September 2020 there have been 10,850 reports of new Covid-19 cases across 1,281 schools in Wales; 4,555 cases in staff and 6,295 in pupils.

From a total of 1,573 schools across Wales that means 81.4% of schools have had a Covid-19 case but of those 208 schools have had only one case.

Public Health Wales has stressed that cases reported by schools do not necessarily mean infection took place there.

Secondary school pupils and staff are being asked to take several voluntary tests each week.
