Coronavirus cases in Nottinghamshire more than double in 24 hours

The number of coronavirus cases in Nottinghamshire has more than doubled in the space of 24 hours.

Public Health England's latest figures show the number of cases in Nottingham jumped from five to 10, while cases in Nottinghamshire increased from six to 14.

There are now a total of 24 COVID-19 cases in the city and county.

Bosses at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) also confirmed a man in his 90s has died after testing positive for the virus while being treated at Queen's Medical Centre.

The stark increase comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson briefed the nation on Monday, March 16, as he urged everyone to avoid non-essential contact, mass gatherings and travel.

In the UK, officials said 44,105 people have been tested in the UK, of which 42,562 were confirmed negative and 1,543 were confirmed as positive.

So far, 55 people have died.
