Coronavirus cases in Leeds increase by over 380 per cent in two weeks

The number of coronavirus cases recorded in Leeds has increased by a staggering 389 per cent in just two weeks.

On March 31, Public Health England announced that 150 cases had been diagnosed in Leeds and by April 14 that number had risen to 734.

Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust has confirmed that 88 people have died in the city, after contracting Covid-19.

However, the number of people in Leeds who have contracted the virus is likely to be a lot higher, as many of the people who have shown symptoms have not been tested.

The government is now aiming to carry out 100,000 tests a day in England by the end of April and has set up 15 drive-thru test centres, including one in Temple Green, but it only open to NHS workers at the moment.

The government has also promised to ramp up testing in care homes, after it was revealed that there had been outbreaks at over 2,000 care homes in England.

In Yorkshire, 5,278 people have tested positive for the virus in hospitals and 682 people have died.

And across the UK, 93,873 people have tested positive and 12,107 have died.

The UK is now in the fourth week of lockdown, after the government ordered people to only leave their homes under a list of “very limited purposes”, banned public gatherings of more than two people and closed non-essential shops, schools, pubs and restaurants.

Dominic Raab, foreign secretary, has said the government is not expecting the make changes to the restrictions this week and "we are still not past the peak of this virus".
