Coronavirus cases in Leeds continue to rise as 76 more people confirmed in the city

The number of people to test positive for coronavirus in Leeds has continued to rise after there was an additional 76 cases confirmed today.

There was a surge of confirmed cases across Yorkshire over the last 24 hours with 336 more people testing positive for the virus in the county.

This means that 37,737 cases have now been recorded in the county since the start of the pandemic.

It was an increase of 48 on the 288 people confirmed to have the virus the previous day, with the biggest increase being in Leeds and Bradford where there were 76 cases each.

Despite the continued increase in cases, there have now not been any deaths recorded in Leeds hospitals from people who tested positive for the virus in four weeks.

Sheffield and North Yorkshire had the joint second most cases with 33 each and Kirklees had the most additional cases with 28.

At the other end, there was just one additional case in East Yorkshire and four and eight in Hull and York respectively.

Across the UK there were 2,919 new cases confirmed, taking the total to 358,138.

While it is important to note that an increase in the number of cases recorded could be down to the amount of tests being carried out, the government has voiced concern over the rise in infection rates.

Because of the huge rise nationally, people will be banned from meeting in groups of more than six from Monday (September 14), with some exemptions in place.

People are urged to follow social distancing guidelines, wash their hands regularly and wear a face covering if possible to help stop the spread of the virus.
