Coronavirus cases in Bristol edge closer to 700

Official daily figures have recorded a handful more coronavirus cases in Bristol and nearby areas.

Government statistics have been released for the latest 24-hour period, up to 9am this morning (Sunday).

Bristol recorded one more case compared to the previous day, with the total confirmed number now reaching 694.

North Somerset has finally seen a slow-down in cases following more sizeable jumps throughout this week, with only two additional cases to report, bringing its total to 404.

South Gloucestershire has recorded no new cases for the third day in a row, staying at 399.

Bath and North East Somerset recorded two more cases, following two days without any, taking the total to 232.

Numbers are often fewer over the weekends due to lower reporting rates, according to Public Health England.

Nationally a further 118 deaths have been recorded in today's figures, and a further 2,409 cases.

The total number of cases in the UK is now at 259,559, and 36,793 people diagnosed with the virus have now died.

Boris Johnson said in tonight's coronavirus briefing "we are beating this thing", but urged people to continue following the rules.

He also confirmed the plan for primary schools to partly reopen on June 1 is going ahead, despite concerns from unions about safety.
