Every year group has been affected by coronavirus in a Wirral school, as the region’s infection rate continues to spiral.
St John Plessington Catholic College, a secondary school in Bebington, Wirral, has been hit by infections across the school.
Maria Sharratt, head teacher at St John Plessington, said there had been cases across “all year groups” at the school but it was not the case that whole year groups of children were having to self-isolate.
Instead, certain classes or smaller groups deemed to have had close contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus are self-isolating.
Ms Sharratt added that staff were working tirelessly around the clock to make sure children had the best education whether they were able to physically attend the school or not.
Several Wirral schools have had cases of the virus since their full return at the start of last month. Before St John Plessington, at least 12 Wirral schools had been affected.
The list of schools includes:
- Woodchurch High School
- Brackenwood Infant School
- Ridgeway High School
- Meadowside School
- Bidston Village CE Primary School
- St John's Catholic Junior School
- Co-op Academy Bebington
- Lingham Primary School
- The Mosslands School
- Gayton Primary School
- Somerville Primary School
- Holy Spirit Catholic and CE Primary
Scores of schools across other parts of Merseyside have also been affected by coronavirus.
The high number of schools hit by coronavirus infections reflects the rising number of cases across the region.
Over 5,500 cases have been registered across Merseyside in the seven days to October 2 at a rate of 388 per 100,000.
Knowsley and Liverpool have the two highest rates in the region, at 516 and 515 per 100,000 respectively.

Wirral’s case numbers have risen far more slowly than those for the rest of Merseyside recently, only climbing from 192 to 222 per 100,000 in the last seven days.
However, this is still a very high number and a huge rise on the borough’s rate of 42 cases per 100,000 recorded just one month ago.
