Covid-19 infections in nearly every part of Wirral are down, but the borough’s infection rate remains high.
In 18 of Wirral’s 22 council wards there were fewer coronavirus cases in the week up to October 30 than the week before.
In Bidston and St James, where cases rocketed up to 104 last week, 53 infections were recorded putting it in line with other areas of the Birkenhead constituency.
Claughton registered more cases than any other Wirral ward in the most recent figures broken down to such a fine level, with 54 infections, one more than Rock Ferry and Bidston and St James.
Claughton was one of just four wards in the borough to see its case numbers rise, albeit marginally from 48 to 54.
Rock Ferry also saw a small uptick in cases, while more significant rises were recorded in Bromborough, from 31 to 44, and Eastham, from 28 to 42.
But across much of Birkenhead, Wallasey and West Wirral cases fell.
These promising numbers are reflected in Wirral’s overall infection rate for the last seven days, figures which cover the week up until November 1.
The borough’s rate declined to 238 per 100,000 people from 293 in the previous week’s figures.
St Helens currently has the highest infection rate in the Liverpool City Region at 393, but its rate is still falling, albeit more slowly than in Liverpool and Knowsley which have been the region’s coronavirus hotspots in recent months.
In Knowsley, the infection rate fell from 557 in the week to October 25, to 366 in the week to November 1, with Liverpool’s rate also going down, from 477 to 330.
A new lockdown came into force across England this morning.
