Coronavirus cases continue to creep up in all areas across Bristol region

Coronavirus cases continue to creep up in all areas across the Bristol region, according to the latest figures released today (Monday, August 31).

Five new patients have been diagnosed with the deadly virus in our city over the last 24 hours, bringing Bristol's total to 1,496.

South Gloucestershire also saw an increase of five, this district now has 840.

A further case was recorded in Bath and North East Somerset, which has 409.

While North Somerset has 946 following a rise of two.

Across the UK, 1, 406 people tested positive for the virus over the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 335, 873.

Covid deaths

Neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded a new death over the last 24 hours.

However, Southmead Hospital reported a coronavirus-related death on August 25, which is the first in the city for two months.

Before this, there had been no Covid-19 deaths at Southmead Hospital since June 22 and none at Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) or Weston General Hospital since July 10.

Nationally, two further deaths were recorded today, bringing the UK's total to 41, 501.

R rate

The Government released figures on Friday showing the South West's R rate has risen from 0.8-1.1 to 0.9-1.1.

If R is below one, it means the virus is shrinking because each carrier passes it, on average, to less than one other person.

And if it is above one, the virus is spreading exponentially because with each stage, it is carried by more people.

The South West's R rate is the joint highest of any region, though it is the same as the national average.

And South West case numbers are too low for the R or growth rate to inform policy decisions, the Government says.
