Coronavirus cases close Northern Ireland school for one week

A post-primary school in Northern Ireland will be closed this week due to a rise in positive Covid-19 cases.

Thornhill College in Derry, which has around 1,500 pupils, announced on Sunday afternoon that they would be closed between October 13 to October 16.

In an email issued to parents today, the all-girls school said they would 'deep clean the school premises on Monday' with staff issuing 'virtual teachings' to students from Tuesday.

"The decision has been taken by the Board of Governors who are mindful of the rising number of positive Covid-19 cases at the school and the associated number of absences from those who are self-isolating," the email read.

"The school will reopen to pupils the following week (returning Monday October 19)."

Thornhill College said they were liaising with the Public Health Agency on their closure.

"The school has been working closely with the PHA on the public health tracking system," they continued.

"[We are] advising any member of the school community to contact the PHA directly in the coming week to report any health issues relating to Covid-19 matters. This has been requested due to staff shortages within the school for Covid-19 reasons."
